The Old Mill

One of the most well-known features of the Berry College campus is the 42 foot, wooden water wheel that was built in 1930.

There was no question about it, we had to see the Old Mill while on the Berry College campus but, where is it?  I have to warn you that if you go to visit Berry (and I recommend that you should) you need to get a map before just wandering around.  The campus is huge and spread out.  Although there are signs to mark major features, you can easily go right past what you are looking for if you don’t know where it is.

The Old Mill is located in the Mountain Campus area which is away from the Main Campus where most of the academic buildings are.  This is also the area where the Frost Memorial Chapel that I showed yesterday is located.

The Old Mill is a 42-foot overshot wooden water wheel that was built in 1930 by Berry College students.  The mill was operated for many years to grind corn into flour for grits and other southern baking specialties.  The mill-wheel has an iron hub that came from an earlier mining community.  The wooden wheel is still operational and is used on special occasions and flour from the mill can be purchased on campus during these times.

I have seen many pictures of the Old Mill wheel reflected in the waterway below it.  Seeing these, I had envisioned the mill located on a sizeable lake but it is actually a small pond.

It is very interesting to look around and you can easily go right up to the mill house and look at the mechanism of the wheel and mill.  The interior of the mill is closed but, I expect that may be open when they have special events.  Glad that I got the chance to see this icon of the Berry Campus and the Rome area!
