Keeping watch

Our resident Cardinal family always shows up as a group.  It never fails that one or two males come in and find a high spot to scope out the situation.  They let the rest of the family go in and eat and then they usually have some form of competition to decide which is the dominant one before moving in to get their turn at the feeder.

We see them swoop and chase each other for a while before the group settles back in and starts feeding again.  They seem to like their space while feeding.  It is pretty rare to see two going to the same feeding station without a fight breaking out.  I guess it is good that I have several feeders available so they can spread out.  Just one more observation of how different birds have their own behavioral patterns.

Photography is my way to capture and share the amazing beauty of God’s handiwork in the people and places that I experience every day. I focus mainly on nature and travel subjects but also do alot of event work for my church and the occasional wedding or portrait session. My residence is Roswell, Georgia – a northern suburb of Atlanta. I try to get around the Southeast as often as possible and would love to explore other parts of the USA and the rest of the world.
