Red Roadster

There were some fantastic vehicles at the United Way car show last week.  This one just glowed in the sunshine.  I am sure that the owner spent way too many hours polishing to get this kind of sparkle.

The one thing that always frustrates me at car shows is the open hood deal.  I know that they judge the car engines as well as the outside but you just can’t get a good shot of the car as it would look driving down the road.  They should have a time during the show for photo opportunities when everything is closed up and another time for judging.  While I’m at it, they should set up an area for car portraits where you don’t have the clutter behind and the pavement is wet so it reflects the cars.  Then the owners could come pose with their cars.  Somehow, I don’t think photographers are their first concern.  Oh well, they are great to look at anyway.

Big Old Caddy

This is kind of the definition of “Land Yacht”.  A memory from back in the day when bigger was better and chrome was king.  The white 1941 Cadillac Convertible shown here is actually a working car.  The owner rents her out (with the owner driving of course) for weddings and such.  (www.classicconvertiblecarriages.com)  I’m sure he gets lots of business with such a beautiful vehicle.

1940’s Pontiac Woodie Station Wagon

An amazing sight at the United Way Car Show was this beautifully restored, Pontiac Streamliner station wagon.  The wood-paneled sides of the iconic “woodie wagon” bring back memories of old surfer scenes.  This one falls into the category of classics like the Model-T and VW Beetle that were constantly being restored or just being nursed along till the wheels fell off.

It is also a stark contrast to compare vehicles like this to those of today.  The Pontiac Streamliner wagon was last produced in 1948.  (This is probably a ’47 or ’48 model)  The car was over 10 feet long (122 inches) and weighed about 2 tons!  I can’t even imagine what gas mileage you would get with a monster like that but, it sure is nice to look at.

Ford Mustang

It’s rather amazing that this car model that started a whole generation of copy-cats has survived for over 50 years.  Lee Iacocca sure had a great idea to build a small, affordable sports car with the original “pony car” but of course, all good ideas eventually get improved until they don’t work any more.  From it’s introduction in 1964, they made it bigger and heavier until it was a lumbering gas-guzzling hulk.  Ford almost killed if off when they tried to down-size it with the Mustang II but it is now back to the styling that made this a favorite of American motorists.

Sometimes, you shouldn’t mess with a good thing!

Take me out to the Ball Game

I just had to share a few images from our first trip to the new Sun Trust Field.  We were offered free tickets for the last home game of the year so, off we went to watch the Braves.  I have to say that the new stadium is beautiful.  We got nice seats down the first-base line and covered from the direct sun.  It was a very pleasant afternoon.

Sadly, the beautiful surroundings did not result in the home team winning this game but, a gorgeous afternoon at the ball park is hard to beat!

Chrome wrapped Transformer Camaro

I think this car got the most attention at the United Way car show.  It is truly amazing how far people will go in customizing their cars.  This Chevrolet Camaro has a custom chrome wrap on the body, gull-wing doors, red-tinted windows, custom wheels and air-brushed art under the hood and in the trunk.

Can’t image what they spent on this but it sure did get people’s attention!

Ford GT

I got a chance to try out some automotive shots using my new Lee filter yesterday.  This is one of those situations where you can’t control the environment so, you do the best you can.  The biggest challenge with this car show is that the lighting is usually very harsh.  Although some of the cars arrive fairly early, many of them don’t roll in until sometime just before noon.  Pretty much the worst time to take outside photos!

I have not used filters all that much but, I decided it was time to try it.  The graduated filter allows me to cut down the harsh sunlight without needing too high a shutter speed.  That lets me keep enough light to capture shadow detail on the ground without blowing out the sky.  I had to do quite a bit of experimenting which gave me some shots that were way too bright or too dark.  I finally found a combination that worked well and got better results than I thought possible.

This Ford GT is what I have considered a dream car for a long time.  I remember all the years that the race-car version of this automobile was tearing up the tracks all over the world and was amazed when they came out with a street-legal version.  The biggest challenge I had in getting a good shot of this was all the people who were gathered around it.  Had to leave and come back several times before this opportunity came around.
