So, somebody has to explain this to me. On our last visit to Helen, Georgia, we discovered that there are no less than 3 stores dedicated to selling jerky on the main street here. Now, I would expect to see lots of German/Alpine oriented foods (and there are plenty of these) but why all the jerky?
Maybe this is a connection to the outdoorsman-hunting community that is popular in the mountains. I mean, you have to figure out what to do with all that venison, right? But it was really surprised me to find that many shops focused on one product could survive this much competition in a small area.
Either there’s a lot of folks grabbing jerky snacks to take out on camping, hiking and tubing trips or they are sending the exotic stuff out to people in different parts of the country to prove that yes, there really is Alpaca jerky!
I can think of one particular time that this must be very popular – the annual Florida/Georgia game. Anyone for GATOR jerky?
