On Father’s Day, my wife Joyce and I drove down to the Atlanta Botanical Garden to see the large-scale exhibit featuring the work of glass artist – Dale Chihuly. This is the second time the artist has displayed his works in the gardens here. The first exhibit was in 2004 and some of the pieces from the first show are on permanent display in the gardens.
Experiencing the Exhibit
Chihuly’s glass sculptures are spread throughout the grounds of the Botanical Garden. It is a wonderful experience to walk among the lush shaded landscape and admire this artwork. Some of the installations are groups of multiple individual glass works and others are integrated single works. All of the glass work is amazing to look at. The colors shapes and textures are fantastic.
A couple of the pieces include or are entirely made up of neon. I was very impressed by the Saffron Tower (see picture below) which is a 30-foot neon sculpture that is installed in the “Water Mirror” in the Glade Garden. This must be fantastic to see during the Chihuly Nights events when the works are all illuminated in the evening. I would like to see that! Unfortunately, we discovered that in spite of the fact that we joined as members, there is an additional charge for the night-time display.
Another fantastic integration of Chihuly glass with the Gardens setting is the installation which I featured (above) on this post called: Fiori Boat and Niijima Floats. The glass art is set in the fountain of the Cascades Garden in front of the permanent topiary display called Earth Goddess. Viewed from the right angle, it looks as if the goddess is blowing glass bubbles across the surface of the water.
Chihuly in the Garden Installations (2016)
In all, the exhibit includes 20 installations. I have included pictures of the 19 glass sculptures on display. The 20th installation is a photo gallery with history and information about the artist and his glass works.
